[IMAGE 5 of 6] This Pogonomyrmex magnacanthus nest was approximately 3 inches in diameter and consisted of a barely visible, eroded ‘mound’ with a single entrance, located in loose, sandy soil. Some workers were tentatively peering out of the nest entrance, while a few others foraged singly. Workers were ‘shy’ and non-aggressive.
ADDITIONAL NOTES/REFERENCES: Pogonomyrmex magnacanthus is found in Hot Desert habitats in southern California, western Arizona, and parts of Baja California and Sonora, Mexico. P. magnacanthus constructs nests in loose, sandy soil – usually in dunes, or inter-dune habitats. The 4.7–5.2mm long workers forage singly. Colonies probably contain about 100-225 workers.
