Pogonomyrmex huachucanus
● Whitehouse Picnic Area, Madera Canyon [Santa Cruz Co], AZ USA [el. 1433 m / 4700 ft] (LOC: A19114) (N31° 43.999' W110° 52.984') ● 04/04/2019 8:51AM mostly sunny, air temp: 15.5C / 60°F
[IMAGE 3 of 4] With an air temperature of 60°F/15.5°C, these Pogonomyrmex huachucanus workers were just becoming active. A week earlier (3/23/2019) the workers of this colony were observed foraging with an air temperature of 80°F/27°C. Workers were foraging singly, and some where returning to the nest with unidentified grass seeds. This nest is cryptic, consisting of an irregular, elongated entrance approximately 2 inches long, in sandy soil, partially covered by leaf litter.
ADDITIONAL NOTES/REFERENCES: These small Pogos (Ephebomyrmex group) forage singly for seeds and dead insects/insect parts. The small colonies (probably fewer than 200 workers) are usually found at higher elevations, and nest entrances are often cryptic.
