A Pogo's tough, chitinous exoskeleton (integument) gives the ant its form, serves as defensive armor, and helps to minimize water loss in an often harsh, arid environment. Some specific morphological features, such as the two-noded 'waist' (petiole, and post-petiole - characteristic of these ants and others of the subfamily Myrmicinae), the propodeal spines, and the intricate surface sculpture, can all be seen in this image of a Pogonomyrmex salinus worker.
