Pogonomyrmex salinus
● NW of Mattawa [Grant Co], WA USA [el. 152 m / 500 ft] view location in Google Maps » ● 9/14/09 8:02AM 50% cloud, air temp: 20°C / 68°F
A P. salinus worker navigates the area near her nest, in central Washington state. Where color is concerned, the ants of this species can vary considerably - ranging from a rather dark red, to a lighter orange-red (as seen here), to reddish-brown. Over the years, this intra-specific color variation has probably led to some confusion regarding the classification of these ants. [scroll down for additional notes/references]
