This is a visual introduction to Formica obscuripes - the western thatching ant (total run time: 9 min 27 sec). 'Domain of the Thatching Ant - Part II' (total run time: 10 min 28 sec) touches on some of the food-gathering behaviors of F. obscuripes. Both shot in natural, ambient light. A few hints for viewing the video: When viewed on some laptops, the video may not completely fit on the screen, if this is the case, simply choose a smaller video display size at the top of the page - best viewed at the 'mid-def' size, or smaller (size choices are available at top of page after movie loads), or by viewing on Vimeo or YouTube (see links above). For slow connections you may see stops or stutters as the video loads. Check the status bar to see if the playback marker is catching up to the load indicator. If it is, pause the video to allow it to load. Dragging the status bar back to the beginning of the video, and starting over may help. Also, turn off any other unneeded applications that may be using the network connection, or just using a lot of your computer's resources. If problems continue, try a smaller display size.
