[IMAGE 1 of 4] While they sometimes retrieve leaves and other plant parts that are lying on the ground,
Atta mexicana ants are more often seen actively cutting manageable pieces out of fresh leaves. In this image, one worker (at left) is busy slicing out a portion of the leaf with her sharp mandibles, while a nestmate briefly walks up from the other side. The second worker quickly left, and found an unoccupied leaf of her own to cut. This evergreen plant, 'Nanche de la costa'
(Ziziphus sonorensis) was the only plant with fresh green leaves in the immediate vicinity at this time of year.
